Vice President Harris: Support Cancellation of $50,000 in Student Loan Debt for Every Borrower

Today, over 44 million Americans carry more than $1.7 trillion of student debt. This burden falls heaviest on communities of color – particularly Black women, who carry the most student loan debt of any group.

That is why 1000 Women Strong and the ACLU are working together to urge Vice President Kamala Harris to support canceling $50,000 in student debt for every borrower. Add your name to our petition to join us in action today!

Dear Vice President Harris:

We urge you to publicly support the movement to cancel $50,000 of student debt for every borrower.

The burden of student debt falls disproportionately on Black women, who are often primary breadwinners, and prevents them from buying homes, starting families, engaging in entrepreneurship, investing for retirement, or saving for their children’s future. Canceling student debt is a solution to this crisis. It would help close the racial wealth gap by more than 20 percent and secure financial stability and economic mobility for millions of Black women.

Due to centuries of racism, Black families have far less access to generational wealth to pay for college than white families. As a result, they are more likely to take on student loans and struggle with repayment. In fact, two decades after taking out student loans, the median Black borrower still owes an astounding 95 percent of her student debt, whereas the median white borrower owes just 6 percent.

Sign our petition telling Vice President Harris that we need her public support to cancel $50,000 of student loan debt for every borrower NOW.
